How was the he caught?
John Wayne Gacy was put under suspision when the disapearance of 15 year old Robert Piest in the late 1978 occured. The police were lead to Gacys house because he had offered a job to Robert soon before his disapearance. After a background check of Gacy, the police obtained a search warrant of his house because of his past sodomy conviction.
On December the 13th, 1978, Gacys home was searched and and a number of items were confiscated, which included drivers licences and college rings, but no bodies were discovered, although investigators noticed the
strange smell, but Gacy blamed it on a broken drain pipe. Gacy was then placed under 24-hour surveilance and neighbours were questioned as to anything suspicious in Gacys resisdence.
Forensics finally linked one of the college rings to a missing boy named John Szyc. A more extensive search og Gacys crawl space was conducted revealing a horrific amount of deaths due to Gacys killing spree. On December 22nd 1978, Gacy finally
admitted to killing at least 30 victimes, most of which were found surrounding Gacys property but as well as 3 that had been dumped nearby in the Des Plaines river.
Robert Piests body was finally found by the side of the river considering Gacys basement had filled up. Forensic workers ensured that all but nine of Gacy’s victims were finally identified.
